Start in Guangzhou for food and shops, take a morning high-speed train to Guilin, then finish with two slow nights in Yangshuo. This order suits first-timers because the hardest city days come while you still have energy.
It is normal to worry that a city and a scenic trip will not fit together in a week. They do, as long as the train day is a travel day and not a sightseeing day.
Who is this route for?
It suits first-timers, shoppers, couples and mixed-age families who like a proper city first. Guilin is at about 153 m[1] and Yangshuo at about 137 m[2], so the trip has no altitude concerns.
What does the route look like?
- Day 1: arrive in Guangzhou
- Day 2: Shamian Island, dim sum, Canton Tower at night
- Day 3: slow morning, high-speed train to Guilin
- Day 4: Li River cruise to Yangshuo
- Day 5: Yangshuo countryside
- Day 6: return to Guilin
- Day 7: Guilin sights and the flight home
Day by day
Day 1: arrive in Guangzhou
Guangzhou Baiyun Airport is about 28 km north of downtown[3]. Terminal 1 closed for renovation from 7 May 2026, with departures moved to Terminal 2 or 3[4], so check your terminal in the airline app. Several Malaysian cities connect here: Spring Airlines flies Guangzhou to Penang[5], and Kuching has a Guangzhou service of about three hours[6]. See the Baiyun airport transfer guide for the way into town.
Day 2: heritage, tea and lights
Start with a dim sum breakfast, then walk Shamian Island. Our yum cha morning guide explains how to order, and the Shamian walk is flat and shaded. Finish with the Canton Tower and Pearl River night cruise.
Day 3: the train day
Take a morning train and keep the afternoon free. Guilin to Guangzhou high-speed trains take roughly 2 hours 7 minutes to 2 hours 35 minutes depending on train type[7]. Add the station transfers and the early arrival: at major stations arrive 30 to 40 minutes before departure[8]. In practice this is a half-day move.
Your passport is needed to buy a ticket and pass the platform gate[9]. Check the rail versus flight tool if you are tempted by a flight.
Day 4 and 5: river, then slow Yangshuo
On Day 4 take the Li River boat to Yangshuo. The Li is 164 km long, and the stretch from Guilin to Yangshuo is about 83 km[10]. Spend the evening on West Street. Day 5 is for the countryside by bamboo raft or bicycle, and for doing very little else.
Day 6 and 7: back to Guilin
Return to Guilin and see Elephant Trunk Hill or Reed Flute Cave. Our Reed Flute Cave and Elephant Trunk Hill note shows how to fit both in a morning. Fly home from Guilin on Day 7, or take the train back to Guangzhou if your flight leaves from there.
How long are the travel legs?
The Guangzhou to Guilin train is the long one. G trains are the premier high-speed trains, running up to 300 km/h[11], but the door-to-door time is longer than the ride. The Li River boat day is the other long day, so plan nothing hard after it.
Where should you stay?
In Guangzhou, pick an area before a hotel: Tianhe for shopping and the tower, Yuexiu or Shamian for history. Choose Guilin by the city centre stay guide, and Yangshuo by walkability to West Street.
How can you adapt it?
- Seniors: do one sight a day in Guangzhou and use taxis between them.
- Muslim travellers: Huaisheng Mosque (the Lighthouse Mosque) stands at 56 Guangta Road, Yuexiu, within walking distance of Ximenkou Station[12]. Look for the green 清真 sign, and check halal.gov.my for labels.
- Shorter: drop Guangzhou and use the four-day plan.
- Connectivity: Google services and WhatsApp are blocked in mainland China[13], so prepare your phone before you fly.
What should you book ahead?
Book flights, the Day 3 train when its sale window opens, and the first Guangzhou night. Save the number of the Consulate General of Malaysia in Guangzhou after hours, +86 188 0208 7683[14]. Compare quotes against this day list, then price the trip in the budget planner.
What if the plan feels too full?
Cut from the city, not the hills. Drop the Canton Tower evening before you drop the Li River day, because the river is the main reason to choose this route. A free afternoon in Yangshuo is also worth more than a third Guangzhou meal.
Read your final list once more and ask whether any single day has two big moves. If it does, split it or remove one.
