Chongqing

Beyond the Chongqing Skyline

You have seen the city lights and now want stone, caves and gorges without a rushed coach day.

Five days is enough to see Chongqing’s riverfront, the Dazu Rock Carvings and the Wulong karst, if you sleep one night in Wulong and fly in and out of Chongqing. The city gives you the lights; the stone and the gorges give you the quiet.

It is written for culture lovers and return visitors who want more than a skyline.

Who is this route for?

It suits couples, friends and parents who enjoy carvings, caves and short walks. It is less suited to anyone who cannot manage steps at all, because both Dazu and Wulong have stairs.

The Wulong region guide explains the area in plain terms before you decide.

What does the route look like?

  • Day 1: arrive in Chongqing and rest
  • Day 2: Chongqing city, Hongyadong at night
  • Day 3: Dazu Rock Carvings
  • Day 4: on to Wulong and sleep there
  • Day 5: Wulong in the morning, back to Chongqing, fly home

Day by day

Day 1: arrive and rest

Chongqing is reachable by direct flights from some Malaysian cities. Chongqing Airlines began Chongqing to Penang on 9 April 2026, flying Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday[1]. It also flies to Kota Kinabalu on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday[2]. Confirm the schedule before you book.

Check in, eat something light and sleep. The city is steep, so save your legs.

Day 2: the city and Hongyadong

Spend the morning slowly around Jiefangbei, then rest. At dusk, walk to Hongyadong, where the stacked riverside buildings light up. Our night-view guide explains the best order for the evening.

Day 3: Dazu Rock Carvings

This is a full day out of the city by road. Go early, walk the main carving sites at an easy pace and have lunch near the site. Ask your agent for the guide’s name and whether the entry tickets are included.

Return to the hotel for a rest and a gentle dinner.

Day 4: Chongqing to Wulong

Leave after breakfast for Wulong. The road is a half-day journey, so travel in comfort and eat a proper lunch. Chongqing belongs to the group of four provinces and municipalities that share the South China Karst listing[3], and the Wulong landscape is the reason for today.

Take a short walk before sunset and sleep early.

Day 5: Wulong in the morning, then home

Do the main karst walk in the cool of the morning. After lunch, drive back to Chongqing and take an evening flight home, or add a night in the city for a safer buffer. Keep your passport in your hand bag throughout.

How long are the road legs?

Dazu and Wulong each cost a large part of a day in the car. Plan the whole of Days 3 and 4 for those legs. Do not stack a train, a long walk and a late flight on the same day.

If you use rail anywhere, remember that you need your passport to buy a ticket and pass the gates[4].

Where should you stay?

  • Chongqing: near Jiefangbei or the riverfront, for walking back after dark
  • Wulong: a hotel near the scenic area, so the morning walk starts fresh

Our Chongqing hotel areas guide explains how the hills affect the walk. Think in areas, not hotel names.

How can you adapt it?

  • Shorter: drop Dazu and keep the city plus Wulong for four days.
  • Longer: add the Yangtze Three Gorges for a river leg.
  • Seniors: pick the vehicle options at Wulong and skip the optional stair loops.
  • Halal meals: ask for Hui-run restaurants, because the Hui avoid pork[5]. Muslim-owned is not the same as certified.

What should you book ahead?

Book flights, the Wulong night and any timed entry tickets. Ask the quote to state who drives, how long each leg takes and whether there are shopping stops.

Check the pace with the pace checker and price it in ringgit with the budget planner. The itineraries topic page lists more routes.

Questions Malaysians ask

Can I fly straight into Chongqing from Malaysia?

Yes, from some cities. Chongqing Airlines began Chongqing to Penang on 9 April 2026, four times a week, and flies Chongqing to Kota Kinabalu on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Schedules change, so confirm with the airline or your agent before you plan around a day.

Is Wulong a day trip or an overnight?

Both work, but an overnight is kinder. A day trip means long hours in a vehicle for a few walking hours. One night in Wulong lets you do the karst walks in the cool of the morning and avoid a late drive back.

How much walking is there at Dazu and Wulong?

Dazu is mostly gentle paths and steps beside the carvings, with a few climbs. Wulong has more stairs and longer walks, though some sections allow rides. Ask your agent which parts are optional so parents can choose their own pace.

Is this route good for a second trip to China?

Yes. If you have already seen Hongyadong or Beijing, the carvings and karst give a quieter, older side of China. It works well after a first trip, because you do not need to repeat the headline sights.

Do I need to see the Yangtze Three Gorges too?

No, but it combines well. The gorges are a separate river journey and need their own days. Read the Yangtze region guide first, then decide if you want to add a cruise or keep this route as a land trip.
