Choosing Where to Stay in Chongqing

A city of hills, stairs and lifts inside buildings: pick the area that spares your legs.

For most first visits, Jiefangbei is the easy answer: central, full of food and close to the riverside. Choose a spot near Hongyadong only if the night view is the point of the trip. Guanyinqiao suits friends who want a busy evening and metro access.

Chongqing is built on hills, so a short distance on the map can mean steps, slopes or a lift inside a building. That is what you are really choosing between. A hotel that looks close may still take ten minutes with two suitcases.

How do the three areas compare?

Use the table as a first filter, then check each hotel entrance on a map.

HongyadongRiverside lights at nightFriends, photo loversSteps and steep approaches
GuanyinqiaoBusy shopping, lots of eateriesFriend groups, evening eatersNoise, long metro exits

Read the Hongyadong at night guide before you commit to the riverside.

What is hardest with luggage?

Slopes and stairs. Ask the hotel for the street entrance that a taxi can reach and whether a lift runs from that level.

If you arrive by rail from Chengdu, the fast trains take roughly 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 30 minutes, with the fastest reported near 1 hour 7 minutes[1]. Which Chongqing station you arrive at changes your area, so read the north versus west station guide.

Coming by air from Penang? Chongqing Airlines began flights on 9 April 2026, four times a week[2]. Schedules change, so confirm before booking.

How do you find halal food?

Search the hotel map for 清真 (qingzhen), the green sign for Muslim food, and ask about the kitchen and ingredients. Muslim-owned is not the same as certified.

Hot pot needs extra care, because broth is shared. Ask for a separate pot and separate utensils, or choose a noodle shop instead. We name no restaurant as certified, so confirm on the spot.

Which area suits which group?

  • Parents or seniors: Jiefangbei, with the shortest walks to food.
  • Friends with a late night planned: Guanyinqiao or near Hongyadong.
  • Photographers: near the river, with a taxi for the return.

The Liziba monorail guide helps if you plan to ride through the building. Weighing Chongqing against its neighbour? See Chengdu versus Chongqing as a first base.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is Jiefangbei a good place to stay in Chongqing?

For a first visit, yes. It is the central shopping district, so food, shops and the riverside are close. The cost is crowds and noise at night. Ask the hotel which exit to use, because levels and slopes here can double a short walk.

Should we stay at Hongyadong for the night view?

Staying right at the riverside gives you the lights from your window, but expect steps and steep approaches with bags. Some groups prefer to sleep nearby on flatter ground and visit in the evening. Check the route from the street to the lobby on a map.

Is Guanyinqiao better for friends on a budget?

It is a busy shopping area with metro access and plenty of food, and it suits friends who want choices in the evening. Compare the walk to the metro exit with your luggage in mind, and confirm what the quoted room rate includes.

How do I find halal food in Chongqing?

Search your hotel map for the green 清真 (qingzhen) sign and Muslim-run noodle shops, and ask about the kitchen. Chongqing hot pot is spicy and uses shared broth, so confirm the pot is separate. Muslim-owned is not certified. We can mark options near your area.
