Five days is enough to see Kangding and Hailuogou Glacier Park from Chengdu if you sleep in Kangding on the way and accept that two days are mostly road. It is a gentler taste of the high west than Daocheng Yading.
This plan is written for people who loved Yunnan’s mountains and photographers who chase mountain light.
Who is this route for?
It suits fit adults, couples and friends who are comfortable with long drives and cold air. It does not suit anyone with a heart or breathing condition, unless a doctor says yes.
Read the western Sichuan guide first, to see what Kangding, Xinduqiao and Tagong offer.
What does the route look like?
- Day 1: arrive in Chengdu and rest
- Day 2: Chengdu to Kangding by road
- Day 3: Kangding to Hailuogou, glacier park
- Day 4: Hailuogou morning, return to Chengdu
- Day 5: fly home
Day by day
Day 1: arrive and rest
Chengdu is at about 500 m[1], so nobody feels the height. Eat gently, repack warm clothes in a day bag and sleep early.
Day 2: Chengdu to Kangding
Leave early. This is a long road day, so plan to arrive in the afternoon and do very little. Walk slowly around the town, drink water and skip alcohol tonight.
Guides to the high plateau describe altitude sickness as the main health risk and advise one to two days of acclimatising before going higher[2]. Tonight is your first step.
Day 3: Kangding to Hailuogou
Drive on to Hailuogou, which sits below the great peaks of the Gongga range. Ask your agent whether the entry ticket and any cable car are included, and who buys them. Walk only short, gentle paths, and let the group split if some prefer to stay by the viewpoint.
Sleep near the park so the next morning starts fresh.
Day 4: Hailuogou morning, back to Chengdu
Do your last walk in the cool morning, when the air is clearest. Then drive back to Chengdu, which is another long road day. Do not book a late flight for the same night.
Day 5: fly home
Leave for the airport early and keep your passport in your hand bag. Malaysian ordinary passport holders can stay up to 30 days per stay without a visa, so a five-day trip is well inside it[3]. Rules can change, so confirm on the official source.
How long are the road legs?
Chengdu to Kangding and Hailuogou back to Chengdu each take a large part of a day. Plan the full day for both. If you want a lighter second half, ask the quote to move the return to a second morning. The Tibetan Plateau gateway guide explains the roads in more detail.
Where should you stay?
- Chengdu: near a metro line; see the Chengdu hotel areas guide
- Kangding: the town centre, so dinner is a short walk
- Hailuogou: close to the park gate, to avoid an extra drive on the glacier day
Think in areas, not hotel names. Ask about heating, because rooms can be cold.
How can you adapt it?
- Gentler: choose Mount Siguniang, which is lower than the far west.
- Longer: add a sixth day in Kangding for a free morning and a second chance at the weather.
- Photographers: ask about sunrise access, because park gates may open after dawn.
- Halal meals: ask for Hui-run restaurants in Chengdu, because the Hui avoid pork[4]. In the mountains, carry backup food.
What should you book ahead?
Book flights, the Kangding and Hailuogou nights, and any timed entry. Ask the quote to state who drives, the hours each leg takes and whether the vehicle is suited to mountain bends.
Check the pace with the pace checker and price it in ringgit with the budget planner. Read the seasons guide for Sichuan before you fix a month.
