Late Arrivals and Early Flights in China

Your flight lands after midnight, or leaves before dawn, and the children and grandparents are tired.

A late landing is manageable if the hotel knows you are coming and your first morning has nothing fixed in it. Confirm your arrival time with the hotel, plan how you reach it, and keep your passport in your hand bag.

What should you confirm before a midnight landing?

Tell the hotel your flight number and expected landing time, and ask them to hold the room. A reply in writing is worth having at the desk.

Ask whether a taxi can reach the door, and save the hotel name and address in Chinese. Read our guide to hotel registration and passport checks for what the desk will ask.

What happens at immigration?

Fill in the online arrival card if you can. China’s online arrival card for foreign travellers became available on 20 November 2025[1], and it can be filed on the NIA website, the NIA 12367 app, or WeChat and Alipay mini programs[2].

Travellers who did not file ahead can complete the card at the immigration inspection site by QR code, on-site smart device or a paper card[3]. Our guide to the China arrival card explains the steps.

How do you get from the airport at night?

Metro lines close at night, before a late flight lands. Chengdu Metro Line 18 links Tianfu Airport to Chengdu South station in about 40 minutes, running 5:55 am to 11:30 pm[4]. After 11:30 pm that line has gone, so you need a taxi.

Foreign visitors commonly hail Didi through the Alipay mini program, which charges the linked Alipay account and needs no Chinese phone number[5]. Kunming Changshui Airport is about 24.5 km northeast of central Kunming[6], so plan for a real ride, not a short hop. Our Kunming flights guide covers that arrival.

Do you need to register after you arrive?

Yes, and the hotel normally does it for you. Foreign visitors must be registered with the local police within 24 hours of arriving at their lodging, and hotels file this for guests using the passport[7]. Carry the original passport when you check in[8].

How do you plan an early flight out?

Treat the night before as the real work. Pack, charge your phone, and agree the departure time with your hotel the evening before.

Book your ride the night before, not at 4 am. For trains, expect X-ray bag checks at station entrances and arrive 30 to 40 minutes before departure at major stations[9]. If you also have a domestic flight, our guide to booking domestic China flights helps.

Questions Malaysians ask

Can I check in to a hotel after midnight in China?

Yes, if you tell the hotel your flight number and landing time in advance. Ask for written confirmation that the room will be held, and carry the original passport, because hotels copy it to register you as a foreign guest.

Do I need to register with the police?

Foreign visitors must be registered with the local police within 24 hours of arriving at their lodging. Hotels file this for guests using the passport, while a private home needs the guest or host to register. Ask at the desk when you check in.

What if the metro has closed when I land?

Use a taxi or a ride-hailing app. Didi can be hailed through the Alipay mini program, which charges your linked Alipay account. Save your hotel name and address in Chinese so you can show the driver.

How early should I reach the airport for an early flight?

Follow your airline's guidance for check-in and add time for the trip there. Plan the night before: pack, charge your phone, and book a ride the evening before. For trains, arrive 30 to 40 minutes ahead at major stations.
