There is no confirmed Kuala Lumpur to Kunming nonstop in the sources we use, so most travellers connect through another Chinese city. When we checked in October 2026, Kunming was not among the nine China-region gateways Malaysia Airlines listed[1]. The one route we could confirm into Kunming starts in Johor Bahru.
If you hoped for a single easy flight, that can feel like a setback. It is a normal planning step, and the options below keep it calm.
Which Kunming route can you confirm?
AirAsia began Kunming to Johor Bahru on 15 December 2025 as AK1381, flying three times weekly with an Airbus A320[2]. That is the useful route for readers in Johor, though schedules move.
For everyone else, our Yunnan flights guide sets out the wider picture, and the Penang, Johor and East Malaysia guide covers the other departure airports.
What are your realistic options?
Three choices cover most plans.
- Fly Johor Bahru to Kunming, if you can reach Johor easily.
- Connect through a gateway such as Guangzhou or Chengdu, both on the Malaysia Airlines list.
- Add a rest night in the connecting city, if the second flight leaves late in the day.
The connection is the flexible choice, since you can keep one booking from Kuala Lumpur right through to Kunming.
How do you book a connection safely?
Keep the whole journey on one ticket where you can. If the first flight runs late, the airline then owns the problem, not you.
Check three things before you pay. Does your baggage go through to Kunming? Is the gap between flights comfortable, with seniors or children in the group? Will you clear immigration at the first Chinese airport and need to re-check your bags?
Our booking guide explains the details of the domestic leg.
What happens when you land?
Kunming Changshui Airport is about 24.5 km northeast of central Kunming and opened on 28 June 2012[3]. Kunming Airport station on Metro Line 6 sits under Terminal 1 at B2[4]. Read the airport transfer guide to choose between metro, taxi and a pre-booked car.
The city stands at about 1,892 m above sea level[5]. Most healthy visitors adapt without trouble, but a gentle first afternoon is wise.
How do you carry on to Dali and Lijiang?
By rail. High-speed trains link Kunming and Lijiang in about 3 to 3.5 hours[6], and Lijiang Sanyi Airport is about 28 km south of the city centre, with flights from Kunming about 30 minutes[7]. Foreigners must show a passport to buy a long-distance train ticket and to pass platform gates[8].
Read the Kunming to Dali and Lijiang rail page for the route, and the Yunnan overview to choose your stops.
What should you do next?
Fix your dates, then choose between the Johor route and a connection. Add the flights to the budget planner, and use the getting around topic page for the rest of the transport plan.
