For a first visit of four or five nights, one Shanghai hotel with day trips to Suzhou and Hangzhou is the calm choice. Change hotels only when you have six nights or more and want an evening in a smaller town. Both plans work, and the right one depends on how you feel about repacking.
It is natural to hope for a single bed and still see the famous places. East China makes that possible more than most regions, because the cities are close.
How do the three plans compare?
Match the plan to your slowest traveller.
| Plan | Hotels | Suits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shanghai only, day trips out | One | Families, seniors, a short stay | Long days, no evenings in other towns. |
| Shanghai, then Hangzhou | Two | Six nights, West Lake lovers | One packing day. |
| Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou | Three | Slow travellers with eight nights | Two packing days and thinner time in each. |
Why is the day-trip plan so workable?
The fast trains do the work. The quickest Shanghai Hongqiao to Hangzhou East trains take about 45 minutes over roughly 202 km[1].
Suzhou is also a short train ride away, so you can see its gardens, which UNESCO (the UN heritage body) inscribed in 1997[2], and be back for dinner. Keep your passport in your day bag, as rail tickets and platform gates need it[3].
What does staying in Hangzhou add?
It adds the West Lake evening. The lake was inscribed in 2011[4], and most areas around it have been free to enter since 2002[5].
Day visitors leave in the afternoon, so a night here gives you a slower walk. If that appeals, read the Hangzhou area guide before choosing a district.
Where in Shanghai should the base be?
Choose the area by the station you will use. Beijing trains mostly arrive at Shanghai Hongqiao, about 18 km west of central Shanghai[6]. The quick Hangzhou trains leave from there too.
That distance makes a hotel near a metro line to Hongqiao helpful on early mornings. Compare districts in our guide to choosing a Shanghai hotel area, and note that Shanghai has a medium typhoon risk, mainly from flooding[7].
How should Muslim travellers plan the hotels?
Shanghai is the easier base. Xiaotaoyuan Mosque is at 52 Xiaotaoyuan Street in Huangpu District[8], and our halal neighbourhoods guide maps food nearby.
In Hangzhou, Friday prayers moved away from Phoenix Mosque to the Hangzhou Mosque in 2016, so check the current arrangement[9]. Look for the green 清真 sign and ask about the kitchen. Muslim-owned is not the same as certified.
What should you do on a change day?
Pack a small bag for the night. The official rail limit is 20 kg for adults and 10 kg for children, and bags are rarely weighed[10].
Hotels copy your passport at check-in[11], so keep it handy. Read our note on check-in and check-out timing to plan the hours between hotels.
What should you do next?
Count your nights, then pick a row from the table. The East China circuit guide shows whether the whole loop suits a first trip, and the cities topic page lists other regions.
