Hainan

Haikou or Sanya for a Short Hainan Stay?

You have only a few days in Hainan and want to spend them well.

For a short stay, choose one city. Sanya is the stronger pick when the beach is the point, and Haikou is the easier pick when you land there and want food, old streets and a gentle first trip to Hainan.

It is natural to want both. But splitting a few days between two cities spends one of them on the journey.

Which city suits which traveller?

Here is a plain comparison for a short holiday.

If your heart is set on the sea, take Sanya. If you want a taste of Hainan and a lighter plan, Haikou is a good start.

How do the flights from Malaysia help?

Hainan Airlines announced flight HU477 from Haikou to Penang, due to start on 11 October and fly on Wednesdays and Sundays[1]. We could not confirm that it began, so check with the airline before you plan around it.

9 Air launched Haikou to Kuching in November 2025 on a twice-weekly basis[2]. If you fly from Penang or Kuching, landing in Haikou can save a connection. Schedules change, so confirm before you book.

When is the weather a risk?

Hainan is rated high risk for typhoons[3]. The main season runs from July to September, and a short stay has little room to absorb a lost day. Book flexible rooms and keep one spare day at the end if you travel in those months.

How do you choose by trip length?

  • Three nights or fewer: one city only. Pick Sanya for sea, Haikou for city life.
  • Four to five nights: one city, plus a day trip if the weather is kind.
  • A week or more: both cities work, with a rest day between them.

Our Sanya or Haikou region comparison goes into the longer version. If Sanya wins, read the bay comparison next.

What about food and prayer?

Haikou and Sanya both need halal checks on the spot. Look for the green 清真 sign and Hui-run restaurants, and ask about the kitchen. Our Sanya halal area guide shows how to check meals.

What to do next

Count your nights, then pick one city. If the beach is your reason for going, start with Sanya. If you still want a second stop, look at the quieter side of the island in the east coast region guide.

Questions Malaysians ask

Can we do both Haikou and Sanya in a short trip?

You can, but a short trip loses a day to the move between them. Pick one unless you have a week or more. A rail or road journey between the two cities uses most of a day with luggage, so give it a rest day on either side.

Which is better for a beach holiday?

Sanya. Haikou is a city with a few beaches and a lively old quarter, but Sanya is built for the sea, with resort areas, pools and long beaches. If swimming is the point of your holiday, choose Sanya and accept the longer journey from Haikou.

Is Haikou worth visiting at all?

Yes, for food, old streets and an easy city break, especially if you land there on a direct flight. It suits travellers who want local life more than resort life. Keep it to one or two nights if the beach is what you came for.

What is the flight situation from Malaysia?

Direct flights to Haikou have been announced from Penang and Kuching, and schedules can change. Check the airline site for your own dates. If the route you want is not running, a connection through another Chinese city is the usual fallback.
