To read a China travel time properly, take the headline time and add four things. These are the journey to the station or airport, security and check-in, the wait, and the journey from the arrival station to your hotel. The total is your door-to-door time. A one-hour train is rarely a one-hour trip.
Seeing “45 minutes” on a booking page makes a day feel easy. Then the afternoon disappears. This guide helps you plan the day as it really runs.
What does the headline time leave out?
It leaves out everything on the ground. Most of your time on a travel day is spent before boarding and after arriving.
Start with the first step. Expect X-ray bag checks at station entrances, and arrive 30 to 40 minutes before departure at major stations[1]. You will need your passport to buy a long-distance ticket and to pass platform gates[2], so keep it in your hand.
How far are stations from the centre?
The station on your ticket may be far from where you sleep. Most Beijing to Shanghai high-speed trains use Beijing South, about 6 km from Tiananmen Square, and Shanghai Hongqiao, about 18 km west of central Shanghai[3]. That means a taxi or metro ride at each end.
Airports sit further out. Beijing Capital Airport is about 32 km northeast of downtown[4]. Guangzhou Baiyun Airport is about 28 km north of the city[5]. Kunming Changshui Airport is about 24.5 km northeast of central Kunming[6].
How do you work out the full journey?
Use this simple sum for every leg.
| Step | What to allow |
|---|---|
| Hotel to station or airport | The distance and the traffic |
| Security and check-in | Longer at airports than stations |
| Waiting and boarding | A margin for platform changes |
| The ride itself | The headline time |
| Arrival station to hotel | The distance, plus bags |
For a flight, allow more at each end than for a train. For a very short train such as Guangzhou South to Shenzhen North, which takes about 30 minutes[7], the surrounding steps can be longer than the ride.
What if you are unsure?
When in doubt, choose the earlier option and keep the afternoon free. A relaxed afternoon is a better ending than a rushed one.
Always check the real timetable on 12306 or the airline for your date. Even the “fastest” time quoted for Beijing to Shanghai comes with a note to check 12306[8]. Once you have times, use the rail versus flight tool to compare options, then test the whole route with our feasibility guide.
