China Without Speaking Mandarin

You do not speak Mandarin, and wonder how to order food, ask directions or get help.

You can travel China well without Mandarin if you choose your route and tools in advance. Big cities such as Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou have signs in English and metro announcements in English. Your phone, a printed address card and a payment app do the rest.

It is normal to feel anxious about being unable to ask for help. Most daily moments, from ordering food to finding a train, can be solved with a phone and a pointing finger.

Which routes need the least language?

Start with places where visitors are common and the signs are bilingual.

  • Shanghai, Hangzhou and Suzhou: modern stations, English signage and short rail hops.
  • Beijing: clear metro maps and major sights set up for foreign visitors.
  • Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong: the Hong Kong West Kowloon to Guangzhou South express rail takes about 47 minutes[1].
  • Guilin and Yangshuo: scenic and used to visitors.

Remote areas and small towns need more help. In those places, a local guide matters.

What tools replace spoken Mandarin?

Download these before you fly, because Google services, WhatsApp and other foreign apps are blocked in mainland China[2].

  • Maps: Apple Maps remains functional[3], and Amap added English support in 2025[4].
  • Ride-hailing: foreign visitors commonly use Didi through the Alipay mini program, which needs no Chinese phone number[5].
  • Translation: an app with an offline Chinese pack.
  • Pay: Alipay or Weixin Pay with your own card.
  • A printed card: hotel name, address and phone number in Chinese.

Practise once at home, because setting up in the airport is stressful.

How do you pay without speaking?

Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Discover and Diners Club cards can be bound to Alipay and Weixin Pay without a Chinese bank account[6]. Authorities have also told platforms to speed up binding of overseas cards and simplify identity checks[7].

QR payment needs no conversation. Keep a little cash too, since renminbi cash is legal tender and merchants should accept it[8].

How do you buy train tickets?

Foreigners with ordinary passports can verify their details and buy tickets online via 12306[9]. You can also book through a travel app or an agency, then show the passport at the gate.

Use our rail versus flight tool to decide between a train and a flight on each leg.

What if something goes wrong?

China has no single 911-style emergency number, and operators mostly speak Mandarin[10]. Ask your hotel to help, and show your address card to a taxi or a passer-by.

For non-emergency tourism complaints, 12301 is a national consultation and complaint line, not an emergency number[11]. Save the number of the Malaysian embassy or consulate for your region before you go.

Questions Malaysians ask

Can I manage China with no Mandarin at all?

Yes, with preparation. Big cities have signs in English, metro lines announce stops in English, and phone translation does the rest. Save your hotel name and address in Chinese, download an offline translation app and keep your route short. A guide or a Mandarin-speaking friend helps on harder days.

Which apps work without Google?

Google services are blocked in mainland China, so download apps before you fly. Apple Maps works, and Amap now has English support. Didi can be reached through the Alipay mini program, and a translation app with an offline pack helps. Test them at home first.

How do I show an address to a taxi driver?

Keep the Chinese address on your phone and on a printed card, and show the hotel's card when you want to return. Ride-hailing through an app removes the need to speak, because the route and fare are set before you ride. Our team can prepare a bilingual card for your hotels.

Who do I call if something goes wrong?

China has no single 911-style number, so know the right one: 110 for police, 120 for an ambulance and 119 for fire. Operators mostly speak Mandarin, so ask your hotel to help. Save the number of the Malaysian embassy or consulate for your region before you fly.
