November

Late Autumn Without the Crowds

You missed the October rush, and now you wonder if the leaves and the weather still work.

November is a quieter, softer month in China: the holiday rush is over, autumn colour lingers in the middle and south, and the north starts to feel like winter. It suits photographers, seniors and anyone who dislikes queues. Choose the region to match how much cold you want.

If you missed October, you have not fallen behind. November is the calmer month to enjoy.

Where is autumn, and where is winter?

Colour moves from north to south through the season, so in November the north is already cold and bare. Beijing’s winters are very dry[1], and the capital drops towards its January average of about -3.7 C[2]. Higher places in Yunnan turn cold but stay sunny, as Shangri-La does through winter[3].

What changes in the opening hours?

Two famous sights move to winter hours around November. The Forbidden City ticket office on Duanmen Square runs to 15:40 from 1 November to 31 March[4]. The Terracotta Army museum opens 08:30 to 17:30 from 16 November to 15 March[5].

So plan sunrise starts and finish by mid-afternoon. For the Terracotta Army, have your passport or ID ready, because you need it to buy tickets and enter[6].

How should seniors plan November?

Keep it gentle and low. Yangshuo sits at about 137 m, so there is no altitude concern there[7], while Lijiang city is at about 2,400 m[8] and needs a slower first day.

Aim for one main sight a day, with a long lunch and an afternoon rest. Our guide for senior travellers covers stamina and stairs. The pace checker tells you if the days are too full.

What about air and light?

Autumn light is clear, and shorter days mean golden hour comes early. Northern winter air can turn hazy on some days, so check the air quality guide. Pack warm layers, as the tropical weather guide explains.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is November a good month for China?

Yes, especially for people who dislike crowds. The holiday rush is over, prices ease, and the light is soft for photos. The trade-off is that days are shorter and the north turns cold, so choose the region to match your comfort.

Where is autumn colour best in November?

Colour moves from north to south through autumn, so by November it lingers in central and southern regions while the north is bare. Ask us about your target place close to your date, because the peak shifts from year to year.

Is November too cold for seniors?

The north can be, so pick gentler regions. Low, mild places such as Yangshuo, which sits at about 137 m, avoid altitude worries. Keep days short, build rest into the afternoon and pack layers for cool mornings.

Do opening hours change in November?

Yes. The Forbidden City ticket office closes earlier from 1 November, and the Terracotta Army museum moves to winter hours from 16 November. Always check the official source on the week you travel, since hours can change again.

When do the next holiday dates come out?

The government normally publishes the next year's mainland holiday schedule in early to mid November. As of 19 October 2026 the 2027 schedule had not been found, so check again in November before you book Spring Festival flights.
