December

Planning a Winter Trip in December

Your children have never seen snow, and you want a happy memory, not a cold one.

December in China is a real winter in the north and a cool, dry season in Yunnan. For families who have never seen snow, it can be magical, as long as the cold is planned for. The cold is a gear and pacing problem, and both can be solved.

Wanting your children’s first snow to be a joy, not a struggle, is a good instinct. Here is how to protect that.

Snow or mild: which December do you want?

Start with the experience you want, because the regions are very different. This table compares the main options.

RegionDecember feelSuitsWatch out for
Harbin and the northeastDeep freeze, snow and icePhotographers, older childrenGear, short days, slippery paths
BeijingCold, dry and clearCulture trips, teenagersWind, dry skin
Yunnan (Kunming, Dali)Mild days, cool nightsToddlers, grandparentsCool mornings
The far southCool, grey and dampCity and food breaksUnheated rooms

If you want real ice, the Harbin winter planning guide covers what to wear and how long to stay outdoors. For a gentler first winter, the January guide compares regions by how cold they feel.

How cold does it really get?

Beijing’s winters are very dry[1], and the city averages about -3.7 C in January[2]. Kunming is far gentler, averaging roughly 9 C in January[3]. Shangri-La has cold but sunny winters[4].

Layers matter more than one heavy coat. Our tropical weather guide explains the order to put them on.

How do you handle short winter days?

Plan outdoor sights for the morning, since winter hours end early. The Forbidden City ticket office runs to 15:40 in winter[5], and the Terracotta Army museum is open 08:30 to 17:30[6].

Keep the afternoon for indoor places and a warm meal. For photographers, soft low light helps, but batteries drain faster in the cold, so carry spares in an inner pocket.

What about children?

Keep days short and stops frequent. Thin layers, a hat, gloves and a spare pair of socks go in the day bag. Our guide to toddlers and young children covers rest stops and strollers.

How do holiday dates affect December prices?

December itself is not an official holiday month, but the weeks before Spring Festival can get busy. Lunar New Year’s Day 2027 falls on 6 February 2027[7]. The government’s 2027 notice had not been published when we checked on 19 October 2026[8].

Read the Chinese New Year guide to see how the rush builds. Prices move with the season, so use the budget planner with today’s quotes.

What should you do next?

Choose snow or mild, then match it to your children’s ages. After that, check your dates against the New Year timing. The November guide is a calmer alternative if you want a softer start. Message us when you are ready, and we will build the plan with you.

If snow is the reason for your trip, tell us the children's ages and how much cold they have faced, and we will suggest a region and a gentle daily pace.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is December a good time for a first snow trip?

Yes, if you plan for it. The north gives snow and ice scenery, but needs proper layers, boots and gloves. If your children are very small, a milder region such as Yunnan gives a cool-weather trip with less risk.

How cold is Beijing in December?

Cold and very dry. Beijing winters are very dry, and the city averages about -3.7 C in January, so December already feels wintry. Pack thermals, a windproof coat, a hat and gloves, and moisturiser for dry skin.

Will prices be high in December?

Prices move with demand. The weeks before Chinese New Year can be busy, and Lunar New Year's Day 2027 falls on 6 February 2027. Check flight and hotel quotes early, and use the budget planner to compare December with a calmer week.

Do sights close early in winter?

Some do. The Forbidden City ticket office stops at 15:40 and the Terracotta Army museum closes at 17:30 in winter. Plan sights for the morning and keep the evening for meals and indoor warmth.

Can children enjoy a cold trip?

Yes, with a short day, warm drinks and indoor breaks. Dress them in thin layers rather than one thick coat, and carry a spare pair of gloves and socks. Stop early if hands or cheeks feel numb.
