Triple Rooms in China, Honestly

Three of you, one room, and a booking page that says triple without saying how.

A triple room in China is a room sold for three guests, but how the third bed is made up changes from hotel to hotel. It may be a proper third bed, a sofa bed or a folding rollaway. Ask which one you will get before you pay.

Three people in one room can work well, and it can save money. It only works if everyone can sleep properly.

How is a triple room usually made up?

There are three common set-ups. Each suits a different group.

Set-upWhat it isSuits
Three single bedsThree real beds in one roomFriends, or a parent with two adult children
Double bed plus singleOne larger bed and one smallerA couple with a child
Twin plus extra bedTwo beds and a rollaway or sofa bedA short stay, or a child

A rollaway is a folding bed on wheels, brought in by staff. It is fine for a child and can be uncomfortable for a tall adult.

Do this: ask whether the third bed is a full bed, a folding bed or a sofa. Then ask the length, so a tall guest knows what to expect.

What about floor space?

Triple rooms look roomy in photos and feel tighter in real life. Three large suitcases can fill the floor. If someone uses a walking stick or moves slowly, floor space matters more than bed count.

Ask for the room size and look at the layout photos. Our guide to room size in square metres shows how to read the figure on Chinese booking sites. If the room looks small, two rooms may be calmer than one.

Who must be registered?

Every foreign guest in the room must be registered with the local police within 24 hours, and the hotel files this using each guest’s passport[1]. That includes a child. Bring all three passports to the desk.

Keep them together in one bag, so check-in does not turn into a search.

How do you word the booking request?

A short and polite message prevents surprises. Include the details below.

  • Number of adults and children, with the child’s age.
  • The bed set-up you want, for example “three single beds”.
  • Whether the third bed is a full bed or a rollaway.
  • Dates, and a request for written confirmation.

If the hotel can only offer a sofa bed, ask whether a child can use it and an adult can take the proper bed. That simple swap keeps everyone comfortable.

When should you book two rooms instead?

Two rooms can be wiser when the group has a light sleeper, a senior, a teenager who wants privacy, or a lot of luggage. The price may be higher, but the rest is better. For families, a connecting room keeps everyone close and separate.

Compare the cost of a triple against two rooms in the package comparator, and add the figures to the budget planner. Read our guide to twin versus double beds if two of you share a bed.

Questions Malaysians ask

What is a triple room in a China hotel?

It is a room sold for three guests, but the bed set-up varies. It may be three single beds, a double bed with a single, or a twin room with an extra bed added. Ask for the exact set-up in writing, because the label alone does not tell you.

Is an extra bed a proper bed?

Not always. An extra bed can be a folding rollaway, a sofa bed or a small mattress. Ask for the bed size and whether it is for an adult or a child. Adults need a full-size bed, so check before you book rather than at the desk.

Do we pay for the third person?

Usually yes, either as a triple rate or an extra-bed charge. Some hotels let a young child share existing beds at a lower cost or none. Ask what the rule is for your child's age and have the answer confirmed in writing.

Will the room feel crowded?

It can. A twin room with a rollaway has less floor space for luggage and walking. If you have large suitcases, ask for the room size and consider booking two rooms instead. Our room size guide explains how to read it.
