Asking for a Non-Smoking Room in China

You or your child cannot sleep in smoke, and a booking page rarely says which floors are clean.

You can ask for a non-smoking room in China, and larger hotels usually offer one. The word is 无烟房 (wu yan fang). The label helps, but smoke can still drift from nearby rooms, so check the room on arrival.

If a child has asthma or a parent is sensitive to smoke, this is a fair worry and worth a short message before you travel.

What can you do before booking?

Start on the booking page. Filter for non-smoking rooms where the site allows it, and read recent reviews for the word “smoke” or 烟味.

Then check the hotel type. Larger chain hotels usually have clearer rules and whole floors set aside. A small guesthouse may not enforce a ban at all. Our guide to hotel types explains how star labels vary.

Do this: choose a hotel that lists non-smoking floors, not only a non-smoking room.

How should you word the request?

Be clear and kind. One short message, once, in two places.

  • Add a note at booking: “Non-smoking room required, thank you.”
  • Send a message through the booking app after you book.
  • Ask for the answer in writing.

Keep the Chinese on your phone so you can show it at the desk.

Non-smoking room, please请给我们无烟房
A higher floor, please请安排高一点的楼层
Please change the room请帮我们换一间房

What do you check at the door?

Open the door and take one breath before you bring in the bags. Smoke smell sits in curtains, carpet and bedding, and you notice it at once.

If it smells, say so politely and ask for another room before you unpack. Staff usually respond to a calm request. Avoid arguing, and keep your confirmation ready.

If the hotel is full, ask for a room on a different floor, then ask again the next morning.

What else helps the air feel better?

A well-ventilated room helps. Our guide to heating and air-conditioning explains what to expect by region, including whether you can open a window. Ask whether the air-conditioning unit can be set to fresh air.

Bring your own simple supplies too. Our bathroom amenities guide lists what to pack, and a small bottle of unscented spray can help.

What if a family member has mobility needs?

Ask for the non-smoking floor and for a lift-friendly room at the same time. Our accessible room guide covers what to ask. If you arrive early, the late check-in and early arrival guide helps you rest while the room is prepared.

Questions Malaysians ask

How do I ask for a non-smoking room in China?

Add a note when you book and send a short message afterwards. Say the room must be non-smoking, name the guests and ask for written confirmation. Show the Chinese words 无烟房 at the desk. A clear request in two places is more reliable than a note in one.

Can a non-smoking room still smell of smoke?

It can, if the floor has smoking rooms or smoke drifts along corridors. Ask for a higher floor away from the smoking rooms, and open the door to check as soon as you arrive. If it smells, ask politely for another room before you unpack.

What is the Chinese word for non-smoking room?

The phrase is 无烟房, pronounced wu yan fang. Show it on your phone together with the word 请, please. Staff understand it immediately, and it works even when your Mandarin is limited or you do not speak it at all.

What if the hotel has no non-smoking rooms?

Smaller hotels may have none, or may not enforce the rule. Ask before booking, and consider a different hotel if the room matters for health, asthma or a baby. Our hotel type guide explains how larger and smaller properties differ.
