For most visitors, base yourself in Beihai and add one night on Weizhou Island only if you want the quiet and can accept the ferry. Beihai is easier for bags, food and trains. The island is for sunsets and slow mornings.
If you have already seen the usual cities and want something calmer, this stretch of the Guangxi coast fits. It rewards flexible people more than tight schedules.
How do the two bases compare?
Use this as a starting point, then check each room for access and refund rules.
| Base | Feels like | Suits | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beihai city | Seafront walks, shops, easy food | Parents, mixed groups, one-bag travellers | Less of the island feeling |
| Weizhou Island | Small lanes, volcanic coast, quiet nights | Friends, couples, slow travellers | Ferry, heavy bags, limited food choice |
A good answer for a group of friends is both: two nights in Beihai and one on the island.
What about the ferry and your luggage?
Pack a small bag for the island and leave the big suitcase at your Beihai hotel. Ask the hotel in advance whether it will hold bags and until what hour.
On the ferry day, carry your passport and medicine on you. Hotels and guesthouses copy the passport at check-in, so bring the original[1].
Is typhoon season a problem?
It can be. China’s main typhoon season runs from July to September, although typhoons can occur from May to December[2]. Coastal Guangxi is rated high risk[3].
Before you pay for a non-refundable island room, ask what happens if the crossing stops. Keep a spare day before any flight home. For longer holidays, read our South China winter escape to compare seasons.
What about halal food?
Halal needs checking meal by meal. Look for the green Arabic sign and the characters 清真 (qingzhen), then ask about the kitchen and ingredients.
Beihai city has more choices than the island, so eat your reliable meals there. On Weizhou, bring snacks and ask your guesthouse what can be prepared. Certification belongs to a specific kitchen, so confirm it on the spot.
Our South China halal region guide explains the checks.
Where does Weizhou fit?
The Weizhou volcano and coast guide shows what you would see on the island, so you can judge whether one night is enough.
If you plan more than one hotel change, the luggage-friendly hotel switches guide and the check-in timing guide help with the details. For more area guides, see the cities hub.
Who should stay in Beihai only?
Seniors, travellers with mobility problems, anyone on a tight schedule and families with young children should keep Beihai as the single base. The Nanning consulate of Malaysia can help in an emergency: +86 159 7778 3818[4].
What should you do next?
Decide first whether you accept the ferry risk. If yes, book one island night with a free-cancellation room. If not, stay in Beihai and make the island a day trip.
Then tell us your dates and we will help.
