Mainland China blocks foreign websites and apps. A VPN (virtual private network) is an app that sends your internet traffic through another country, and some travellers use one to reach blocked services.
What is blocked
Google services (Search, Gmail, Maps, YouTube), WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, X, Telegram and ChatGPT are blocked in mainland China[1]. You will not see an error that explains why, the app simply fails to load.
Where you will meet it on a trip
You will notice it the first time you try to message home, open a map or search for a restaurant. Apple Maps remains functional even though Google Maps is disrupted[2]. That gives you one working map from day one.
One practical tip
Decide before you fly. VPN apps and sites are blocked inside China, so any VPN must be installed before arrival[3]. If you choose one, install and test it at home.
If you skip it, you can still manage. Tell family which app you will use to reach them, download offline maps and keep a translation app ready. See eSIM for China for the data side, and Amap for a map that works.
