Amap, also called Gaode, is one of China’s main map and navigation apps. It shows roads, public transport and walking routes, and it works where Google Maps does not.
Why it matters
Google services, including Search, Gmail, Maps and YouTube, are blocked in mainland China[1]. So the map you use at home may be useless on day one. Apple Maps remains functional even though Google Maps is disrupted[2], which gives you a second option.
Where you will meet it on a trip
You will use a map at the airport, on the metro, in a taxi and while finding your hotel in an old town. Amap added English language support in 2025, with ride-hailing in its English version in 360 or more cities[3]. Dates differ between sources, so verify in the app.
One practical tip
Download the app and the offline areas for each city at home. Pins for your hotel and the stations help, and a screenshot of the hotel address in Chinese helps a taxi driver.
You will also want a data plan that works on arrival, so read about an eSIM for China. The offline maps guide compares the options.
