What does insurance coverage mean?
Coverage is the list of events a travel policy will pay for, and the limits on each one. A policy usually groups these under medical expenses, trip cancellation or interruption, delays, baggage, and emergency return home. What is outside that list is an exclusion.
Where do you meet it on the trip?
You meet it twice: at booking, when a quote says insurance is included, and at the moment something goes wrong, such as a clinic visit, a cancelled flight or a lost bag. By then the wording of the policy decides the outcome, so read it before you travel.
Check also whether the activities on your route are covered. High altitude, in parts of Yunnan, Sichuan or Tibet, is one question to ask the insurer. A pre-existing health condition is the other.
One practical tip
Read five parts of the policy: what is covered, the limit for each cover, the exclusions, what you must do to claim, and the emergency contact number. Keep a copy on your phone and one on paper. Ask for the policy name and insurer if it came bundled with the package.
If you are not sure a line is covered, ask the insurer in writing before you go. Compare the limits on each policy schedule.
