Five days is a good length for a couple in Shanghai and Hangzhou: two nights in Shanghai, two at West Lake and a calm last day. This plan puts the evenings first, then fits the sights around them.
If you worry that China will feel like a rush of crowds and queues, this route is the quiet version. It has only one change of city and plenty of time to sit.
Who is this route for?
It suits couples, honeymooners and any pair who value comfort over a long list of sights. You can stay up to 30 days per stay without a visa on a Malaysian ordinary passport[1], so five days sits well inside the rule. Check the official source before you fly.

What does the route look like?
- Day 1: arrive in Shanghai, riverfront dinner
- Day 2: slow Shanghai day, skyline evening
- Day 3: rail to Hangzhou, lake at sunset
- Day 4: West Lake morning and tea
- Day 5: return to Shanghai and fly home
Day by day
Day 1: land and unwind
Take the maglev if you land at Pudong. It covers about 30 km to Longyang Road in about 8 minutes[2], and you change to the metro there[3]. Check in, then walk the Bund after dark. Malaysia and China share one time zone[4], so there is no jet lag.
Day 2: a gentle Shanghai day
Spend the morning in tree-lined streets and cafes. Rest in the afternoon, then have the big dinner tonight, before a travel day. Our guide to staying near the Bund or Xintiandi helps you pick the right area for these evenings.
Day 3: to Hangzhou
Take a morning train. The fastest Shanghai Hongqiao to Hangzhou East trains take about 45 minutes, over roughly 202 km, but the station pair matters[5]. Check in, rest, then walk to the lake for sunset.
Day 4: West Lake, slowly
West Lake was inscribed by UNESCO in 2011[6]. The Su Causeway was built in 1089[7], and most areas around the lake have been free to enter since 2002[8]. Walk the causeway in the morning and stop for tea.
Day 5: back to Shanghai
Take a late-morning train to Shanghai, leaving margin for your flight. At major stations, arrive 30 to 40 minutes before departure[9].
How should you travel between the cities?
Choose first class, which has larger seats arranged 2+2 with more legroom[10]. Business class is on G trains only[11]. Your passport is needed to buy a ticket and pass the gates[12].
Where should you stay?
In Shanghai, choose an area with quiet evenings and a metro station nearby. In Hangzhou, choose between the lake and the station. The Hangzhou hotel area guide compares them for couples.
How can you adapt it?
- Comfort first: skip the second Shanghai day’s long walks and book a hotel with a lift.
- Muslim travellers: Xiaotaoyuan Mosque is at 52 Xiaotaoyuan Street, Huangpu District, within walking distance of Laoximen Station[13]. Phoenix Mosque in Hangzhou no longer holds Friday prayers, which moved to the Hangzhou Mosque in 2016, so confirm arrangements before you go[14].
- Wet months: Shanghai and Hangzhou carry a medium typhoon risk, mainly from flooding[15]. Compare months in our spring versus autumn guide.
