Use Zhengzhou East station as a rested rail hub, not as a sightseeing base. Sleep near the station on the night you arrive or leave, and treat Longmen and Shaolin as separate day outings. That keeps the days calm and the luggage in one place.
You may feel the pull of two famous names on one map and a clock that will not stretch. Choosing the hub well gives you room to breathe.
Why sleep near the station?
Because the connections happen here. A hotel by the station turns a late arrival or an early departure into a short walk.
| Near Zhengzhou East station | Elsewhere in the city | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Rail hub nights | A full city day |
| Morning | A calm, short transfer | A longer ride with luggage |
| Food | Station malls, simple meals | More local streets |
| Trade-off | Few sights nearby | A cab ride to the train |
Read Xi’an, Luoyang and Zhengzhou to see how the three heritage cities connect.
How do Longmen and Shaolin fit in?
Each is its own day. The Longmen Grottoes lie near Luoyang, and Shaolin Temple lies near Dengfeng, so neither is a short walk from your hotel. Plan one outing per day, and leave the other for another trip if time is short.
Plan most of a day for each leg, and do not stack them with a long train ride. The rail versus flight tool helps you compare the options.
What about luggage and security?
Station entrances use X-ray checks, and at major stations you should arrive 30 to 40 minutes before departure[1]. The official luggage limit is 20 kg for adults and 10 kg for children, though bags are rarely weighed[2].
Keep your passport within reach, because tickets and platform gates need it[3]. G-category trains run up to 300 km/h, with some at 320 or 350 km/h[4], so legs can be short even when the map looks long.
What should you pack for the night?
- A small overnight bag, so the big suitcase can stay shut.
- Your ticket, with the station name and time.
- The hotel address in Chinese on your phone.
- Snacks, in case the dining room closes early.

How do you find halal food?
Look for the green Arabic sign and the characters 清真 (qingzhen), ask about the kitchen and ingredients, and remember that Muslim-owned is not the same as certified. Lanzhou-style noodle shops are easy to spot, but still check the label.
Save a few addresses before you arrive. If you go on to Xi’an, our guide to the Muslim Quarter stay shows how to plan meals there.
Is it the right plan for you?
If you have only one night, the hub works. If you want a full city day, give Zhengzhou less and the heritage cities more. See the stays topic page for other station towns, or ask us to fit the stop into your route.
