Sleep near Xi’an North Station when you arrive late, leave early or need an easy night before a long journey. For a trip built around history and evening walks, sleep in the old city. The station area is practical, but it is not why you came to Xi’an.
If someone in your group tires easily, that is a good reason to think about the first night carefully. A calm first evening sets the mood for everything after.
Which Xi’an base suits you?
Choose by how far each person can comfortably walk. Here is how the two options compare.
| Area | What it feels like | Suits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Near Xi’an North Station | A modern district built around the high-speed railway | Late arrivals, early trains, one-night stops | Few sights on foot, a ride into the old city |
| Old city | Streets, shops and evening life near the historic core | Culture lovers, seniors who like short strolls, longer stays | Busier lanes, a longer ride to the station |
Read our guide to staying inside or outside the city wall before you fix the old-city nights.
What does a long train day ask of seniors?
A calm arrival and a short walk to bed. The fastest Beijing to Xi’an high-speed trains take as little as about 4 hours 17 minutes[1].
That is a comfortable day on a train, but tiring at both ends. Foreigners must show a passport to buy a long-distance ticket and pass the platform gates, so keep it within reach[2].
How should you handle the station morning?
Allow extra time. Expect X-ray bag checks at the entrance, and arrive 30 to 40 minutes before departure at major stations[3].
The official luggage limit on these trains is 20 kg for adults and 10 kg for children, though bags are rarely weighed[4]. Ask the hotel whether a taxi can stop at the door and whether there are steps at the entrance.
Where do you eat halal and pray?
Plan halal meals one by one, and use the Muslim Quarter as your anchor. The Great Mosque of Xi’an stands at 30 Huajue Lane inside the Muslim Quarter[5]. It is traditionally dated to 742 in the Tang dynasty, with the present structure generally dated to 1384 under the Ming[6].
Look for the green Arabic sign and 清真 (qingzhen), and ask about the kitchen. In February 2025 JAKIM (Malaysia’s Islamic development department) removed the China Islamic Association from its list of recognised foreign halal certification bodies, so check halal.gov.my[7]. Our Muslim Quarter stay guide covers noise, food and access.
What about the Terracotta Army day?
Carry your original passport, because passports or ID cards are needed to buy tickets and enter the museum[8]. A station hotel can make an early start easier, but only if the old city is not your main interest.
What is the next step?
Decide which night is the transit night, then book the old city for the rest. If you are weighing Xi’an against Beijing, read Beijing versus Xi’an for a history-focused trip. To plan the wider route, see the Central Plains heritage region guide.
