Sleep inside a scenic town if you want the quiet hours at dawn and can manage lanes, steps and a walk with your bags. Choose the edge or outside if you travel with seniors, young children or heavy luggage, or if you want a calm night. For most first visits, the edge is the safest middle.
It is easy to be torn when every listing says “in the old town”. That phrase can mean a courtyard behind the main gate or a twenty-minute walk away.
Which option suits which traveller?
Pick by who is carrying the bags, not by the photo.
| Factor | Inside the town | At the edge | Outside |
|---|---|---|---|
| Atmosphere | Strongest, especially early and late | Good, with a short walk in | Weak, you travel in |
| Luggage | Often a carry from the gate | Taxi or short roll | Door-to-door by car |
| Noise | Bars and groups share the lanes | Quieter, close to bustle | Quietest |
| Early starts | Walk out the door | A few minutes | Needs a transfer |
| Suits | Couples, photographers | Families, seniors, first-timers | Budget seekers, drivers |
What does “old town” mean in a listing?
It means the hotel is somewhere near, not that you can park at the door. Check four things before you pay:
- Where does a taxi actually stop?
- How far is the walk, and is it level or stepped?
- Is there a room away from the main lane?
- Does the hotel offer luggage help?
The Old Town of Lijiang sits at 2,400 m[1] and was inscribed by UNESCO in 1997[2]. Its cobbled lanes make it a good example of why the wording matters, and our Lijiang old town versus new town guide shows how to read it.
When is staying outside the better choice?
Outside works when the town itself is crowded and the attraction needs an early start. Yangshuo’s West Street drew more than 21.1 million tourists in 2023[3], so a quieter countryside base can make sleep easier. See West Street versus countryside stays for the trade-offs.
Outside also helps when the gate is the point. Jiuzhaigou uses timed tickets with a daily limit of 41,000 visitors[4], so a base near the gate or a town on the way can reduce the morning rush. Compare options in Jiuzhaigou gate hotels versus Songpan.
Is sunrise worth an inconvenient stay?
Only for the right traveller. If a clear dawn is the reason for the trip, a night on the mountain or lakeside can be worth the stairs. If sunrise is a bonus, you can reach most views from a normal hotel with an early taxi. Huangshan summit and Tangkou is the clearest example, and Dali old town versus the Erhai lakeside shows a gentler one.
How do you decide for your group?
Write down who walks slowly, who has the heaviest bag and what time you must be at the first gate. If the answer to any is “a lot”, move towards the edge. Our hotel near the station or near the sights guide uses the same logic for rail arrivals.
Then test the plan. The pace checker shows whether the early starts fit your days, and the stays topic page lists more hotel questions to ask before you book.
