A solo traveller, or one person left over in an odd-numbered group, normally pays a single supplement on a group tour. Ask the agency up front whether a roommate can be arranged, and get the supplement shown as its own line.
The sums are easy to miss when you are looking only at a headline price per person. The room is what changes it.
What is a single supplement, in plain words?
Group tour prices are built on two people sharing a room. When one person takes a twin or double room alone, the agency still pays for the whole room, so it adds a supplement to cover the empty bed.
It is not a penalty, but it is a real cost. Check that the supplement is written on the quotation and not mentioned only in a chat.
Who ends up paying it?
Three groups meet this charge:
- Solo travellers, including widows, widowers and people travelling without a partner.
- Odd-numbered friend groups, such as three, five or seven people.
- Seniors who prefer a room of their own because of snoring, night-time bathroom trips or sleep.
For friends, a triple room can remove the extra cost, if the hotel has one. Otherwise, one person may need a single room.
How do you ask about room sharing?
Send one clear message before you pay. These questions matter most:
- Does the agency match solo travellers with a roommate, and how?
- Can I choose the same gender, and a similar age range?
- If no match is found, do I pay the supplement, or does the agency waive it?
- Is a triple room available in the hotels on this itinerary?
- Is the supplement the same in every city, or does it change by hotel?
Keep the replies in the same thread as your booking. If an answer is vague, ask again in the plainest words you can.
What about seniors and special needs?
Room position matters more than size. A quiet room on a lower floor, a room near the lift or an easy bed height can decide whether the next day is rested or tired.
Agencies can pass your request to the hotel, but they cannot promise a specific room. Write it down, repeat it a few days before departure, and ask what happens if the hotel cannot meet it.
Muslim travellers may also want to ask whether a prayer-friendly space exists in the room, such as enough floor space. That is a simple question to add.
What should you do next?
Compare the single-supplement line across two or three quotations using the package comparator. Read what a quotation should include so the supplement does not turn up late.
If you are choosing between packages, check whether the price includes flights with flight-inclusive or land-only options. The booking topic page lists the rest of the contract checks.
