For a family that wants shopping and easy rail links, Futian is the safe choice. Luohu suits a first night after crossing the border on foot. Nanshan suits those who want more space and a modern feel, and do not mind longer rides.
Shenzhen is a young city with long distances, so the district you pick sets the tone for each day. A hotel near a metro exit saves small legs.
How do the three districts compare?
| District | Feels like | Suits | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Futian | Central, orderly, malls and parks | Families, shoppers | Higher traffic at rush hour |
| Luohu | Older, busy, close to the border | Border crossers, first night | Crowds, older buildings |
| Nanshan | Modern, spread out, waterfront | Couples, families who like space | Longer rides between sights |
Rates change with season, so check them in the budget planner once you have real quotes.
How do rail links change your choice?
If you are going to Hong Kong, Futian can save time. The Hong Kong West Kowloon to Shenzhen Futian ride takes roughly 14 to 15 minutes on trains that stop there[1]. Only some trains stop at Futian, so check the timetable.
Flying in? Malaysia Airlines began Kuala Lumpur to Shenzhen on 1 July 2026 as MH522[2]. Schedules shift, so confirm before booking.

What about halal food and prayer?
Look for the green 清真 (qingzhen) sign and ask about the kitchen and ingredients. Muslim-owned is not the same as certified, and we name no restaurant as certified. Our south China halal guide explains the checks.
Does the weather matter?
Yes. Guangdong, including Shenzhen, is rated high risk for typhoons[3]. In the main season, choose a flexible booking and keep one spare day.
Should you base in Shenzhen or Guangzhou?
It depends on your plan. Compare them in the Shenzhen versus Guangzhou guide, or see our Guangzhou hotel areas.
