You can fly from Kuala Lumpur to Shanghai without changing planes, and it is a gentle first look at China. When we checked in October 2026, Shanghai was on the nine-gateway list Malaysia Airlines gave[1]. The trick is to plan the arrival as carefully as the flight.
If you are travelling with grandparents or children, the first hour in a huge city matters most. Here is how to make it calm.
Who flies Kuala Lumpur to Shanghai?
Malaysia Airlines lists Shanghai among its nine China-region gateways[1]. Shanghai Airlines was also named as an existing Kuala Lumpur to China operator in April 2026[2].
From other airports, Spring Airlines began daily Shanghai to Penang flights in January 2026[3] and resumed daily Shanghai to Kota Kinabalu on 28 January 2026[4]. Compare fares and the baggage allowance before you pay.
Which Shanghai airport will you land at?
Check your ticket for Pudong or Hongqiao, because they are far apart and sit in different parts of the city. Shanghai Hongqiao, used by most Beijing to Shanghai high-speed trains, is about 18 km west of central Shanghai[5].
Our guide to Pudong versus Hongqiao explains which one suits your hotel and your onward plan.
How do you get from Pudong into the city?
The Shanghai maglev runs from Pudong International Airport to Longyang Road, about 30 km, in about 8 minutes at 300 km/h[6]. It ends at Longyang Road, where passengers change to the metro for the city[7].
That change means moving your luggage between platforms. With older parents or small children, a taxi to your hotel door may be calmer. Read the Pudong airport transfer guide to compare the maglev, metro and taxi.
What should the first day look like?
Keep it empty. After a flight and a transfer, a short walk, a meal and an early night are enough. Shanghai, Hangzhou and coastal Jiangsu are rated medium typhoon risk, mainly from flooding[8], so glance at the forecast before you fly.
If you plan to see more than Shanghai, the East China circuit is a gentle first trip.
How do you reach Suzhou and Hangzhou?
By high-speed train. The fastest Shanghai Hongqiao to Hangzhou East trains take about 45 minutes over roughly 202 km[9]. Station pair matters, because Hangzhou West to Hongqiao is about 78 minutes.

What should you do next?
