Rail Station Hotels in Guangzhou and Shenzhen

A train to catch, parents who tire, and a station that is not where you expect.

A hotel near the high-speed rail station is worth it when your train leaves early or when someone in the group tires on the way. It is not the right choice if the station is far from every sight you came to see.

The trick is knowing which station. Guangzhou and Shenzhen each have more than one, and the name on your ticket matters more than the city.

When is a station-side hotel the right choice?

Choose it for the night before an early train, the night after a late arrival, or a one-night stop in a longer route. A short, level walk with luggage beats a taxi in morning traffic.

Skip it for a stay of three nights or more. The area around a station is practical rather than charming, and the sights are elsewhere.

Which station should the hotel be near?

Check the departure and arrival station on your ticket. The fastest Guangzhou South to Shenzhen North trains take about 30 minutes[1], but Futian trips are slower, so the name matters.

From Hong Kong, the West Kowloon to Guangzhou South express rail takes about 47 minutes[2]. If you plan to combine the three cities, our page on Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong planning explains the sequence.

How do you check a hotel near the station?

Ask these four things before you book.

  • The walking time from the hotel to the ticket gate, with luggage
  • Whether the route is level, or has stairs and a lift
  • The metro line and exit that connects to the sights
  • Whether the hotel can store bags after checkout

For seniors, a level route and a lift are worth more than a good view. Ask the hotel to describe the walk.

What do you need at the station?

Foreigners must show a passport to buy a long-distance train ticket and to pass the platform gates[3]. Keep it where you can reach it.

Expect X-ray bag checks at the entrance, and arrive 30 to 40 minutes before departure at major stations[4]. A hotel next door makes that margin easy to keep.

Should you sleep near the station or in the centre?

Ask which night matters more. If the hard day is the train, sleep near the station. If the hard day is sightseeing, sleep where the sights are and take a taxi to the station.

Our page on Shenzhen versus Guangzhou as a base helps you choose the city, and the one on metro versus city centre hotels shows how to test a location.

What is the next step?

Write down the train time and station first, then pick the hotel. If your flight leaves early too, read about airport hotels on a China itinerary.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is it worth sleeping near the station before an early train?

Yes, if the train leaves in the early morning and someone in the group tires easily. A short, level walk to the station saves a taxi in rush hour. Choose a hotel you can reach on foot with luggage, and confirm which station your ticket names.

Which station do I need in Guangzhou?

Guangzhou has more than one station, and trains to Shenzhen and Hong Kong usually use Guangzhou South. Check the station on your ticket, not just the city name, and book the hotel on the metro line from that station.

Do I need my passport at the station?

Yes. Foreigners must show a passport to buy a long-distance train ticket and to pass the platform gates. Keep it in a pocket you can reach, not at the bottom of a suitcase, and arrive early because of bag checks.

Is Guangzhou to Shenzhen a day trip?

It can be, since the fastest trains are very short. But a day trip means two station transfers with luggage. If you have time, sleep in the city where your sights are and travel with only a day bag.
