If your train reaches Dali late and you have a heavy bag, sleep near the station and move to the Old Town in daylight. If you arrive in the early evening and the guesthouse can meet you, go straight to the Old Town. The right answer depends on the hour and on who is carrying what.
Arriving in the dark, in a new town, with tired parents or children, is a real worry. A simple plan removes most of it.
Which is easier for a late arrival?
The station area wins on ease. The Old Town wins on feeling.
| Near the station | Old Town | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Arrival after dark | An early-evening arrival |
| Getting in | A short ride to the hotel | A ride, then a walk over cobbles |
| Evenings | Quiet and practical | Lanes, lights and food stalls |
| Trade-off | Less atmosphere | Luggage over uneven ground |
Our guide to Dali Old Town versus an Erhai Lake base helps once you are settled.
What about the luggage and the lanes?
Old Town lanes are paved with stones, and cars may stop at the edge. Ask the guesthouse where the car stops, how far the walk is and whether someone can help with bags. A soft bag is kinder than a hard case on cobbles.
Keep your passport within reach, because tickets and platform gates need it[1]. Arrive 30 to 40 minutes before your next train at major stations[2].
Is the next morning easier from the station?
Yes, if you plan to move on early. A station hotel gives you a calm start for a train to Lijiang or Kunming. High-speed trains link Kunming and Lijiang in about 3 to 3.5 hours[3], and Dali lies on the line between them.
If you stay for the lake, the next morning is the time to move into the Old Town, with a clear head and a bright street. Read about cycling around Erhai Lake for a slow first day.
How do you find halal food?
Look for the green Arabic sign and the characters 清真 (qingzhen), ask about the kitchen and ingredients, and remember that Muslim-owned is not the same as certified. Late in the evening, choices are fewer, so carry a snack.
Save a few addresses before you arrive. The Yunnan overview explains how Dali fits a longer route.
What should you check before you land?
- The guesthouse pick-up or the exact pin on the map.
- The hotel name and address in Chinese on your phone.
- Lift or stair access to your room.
- Breakfast times for the next morning.
