Where to Stay in Chongqing for the Views

A city of hills and river lights, where the map hides how steep the walk really is.

For a first visit, Jiefangbei is the easiest base in Chongqing, Hongyadong is the place to photograph at night rather than sleep, and Jiangbei suits those who want the skyline across the river.

Chongqing is built on hills, so the question is not just where, but how steep. A hotel that looks close on the map can take a real climb to reach.

How do the three areas compare?

AreaWhat it feels likeSuitsWatch out for
JiefangbeiBusy central district with shops and foodFirst-timers, shoppersNoise and crowds at night
HongyadongRiverside, lit up in the eveningPhotographersSlopes and stairs
JiangbeiThe opposite bank, with a view back to the old coreThose who want the skylineCrossing the river to reach the sights

Jiefangbei is the safe choice. The other two give up convenience for the view.

Which one should you choose?

Choose Jiefangbei if you are visiting for two nights and want hot pot, the metro and a flat-as-possible route within reach. Our page on Chongqing as a night-view trip shows how short stays work.

Choose Jiangbei or a riverside hotel if the night photograph is the goal. Ask for a room on a high floor facing the water, and ask the hotel to confirm it in writing.

How steep is steep?

Ask three questions. Is there a lift in the hotel, how long the steps are from the street to the nearest metro exit, and can a taxi reach the entrance?

Grandparents should choose the flattest route, even if the room is plainer. A hotel beside a metro exit with a lift is worth more than a room with a view.

How does Chongqing fit with Chengdu?

Chengdu and Chongqing pair well on one trip. Chengdu East to Chongqing West takes roughly 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 30 minutes on typical fast trains[1].

Check which station your train uses, then choose a hotel on the right metro line. Our guide on Chengdu and Chongqing as a pair explains how to split the nights.

How do you reach Chongqing from Malaysia?

Chongqing Airlines began Chongqing to Penang on 9 April 2026, flying four times weekly on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday[2]. Schedules change, so confirm before you book.

From Kuala Lumpur, check whether a direct service exists for your dates, or connect through another Chinese city.

What is the next step?

Decide which night matters most, then pick the area that makes it easy. The Chengdu or Chongqing as a first base page helps if you are still choosing a city.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is Jiefangbei a good base for a first visit to Chongqing?

Yes. It is the central shopping and dining area, with the metro close by and plenty of food within a short walk. It is busy and bright, so it suits first-timers who want convenience. If you want a river view, ask for a high floor on the right side.

Can I stay at Hongyadong?

The riverside cliff-side area is more of a place to visit at night than a place to sleep. Hotels around it can be good for photographers. Ask how steep the walk is from the hotel to the nearest metro, and whether the lifts work late.

Is Jiangbei a sensible place to stay?

It can be, particularly for the view back across the river towards the old core. It sits on the other bank, so check how you cross and how long it takes at night. Ask the hotel for the metro station and exit in advance.

Is Chongqing hard for grandparents?

The hills are the challenge, not the distances. Choose a hotel with a lift, a flat route to the metro and a taxi that can reach the door. Ask the hotel to describe the walk and avoid areas where every route to the street involves steps.
