China, Japan or Vietnam: Comparing Trip Costs

Three destinations, one holiday budget, and no fair way yet to compare them.

A fair cost comparison needs the same lines for every country, priced on the same dates. This page gives you that frame for China, Japan and Vietnam, then points to the parts of China that change the picture. It does not quote a winner, because the answer depends on your dates, group and comfort level.

If you are deciding where to spend a limited holiday budget, that is a sensible question to ask before you book anything.

What lines should you compare?

Use the same eight lines for each destination.

  1. Return flights from your Malaysian airport
  2. Hotel nights at the same comfort level
  3. Transport between cities and local transport
  4. Food at a similar style
  5. Sights and tickets you really want
  6. Insurance and mobile data
  7. Visa or entry cost, if any
  8. A cushion for the exchange rate

Fill them in the budget planner once per country. Flights and hotels will probably decide the result.

How do the three compare on setup?

Item to checkWhat to do for each country
Entry rulesRead the official page for the country
FlightsPrice from your own city for your own dates
PaymentsCheck how cards and wallets work there
Mobile dataCompare eSIM or SIM options
LanguageJudge how much help you will need

The table does not rank the three. It tells you what to confirm so the comparison is fair.

What changes the comparison for China?

China has a few features that other trips may not.

Malaysian ordinary passport holders can stay up to 30 days per stay without a visa[1], so a visa fee can drop out of the budget. Rules can change, so confirm on the official source. Malaysia and mainland China share one time zone, so there is no jet lag[2].

Payments need setup before you fly. Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Discover and Diners Club cards can be bound to Alipay and Weixin Pay without a Chinese bank account[3]. Google services, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and Telegram are blocked in mainland China[4], which affects how you stay in touch.

How easy is it to fly from Malaysia?

As of February 2026 Malaysia had about 871 weekly flights and 170,862 seats to 30 Chinese cities[5]. That gives you choice on dates and gateways, which helps when you compare fares. Our guide to Kuala Lumpur to China direct flights lists the cities served.

Check Japan and Vietnam flight options the same way, from your own airport.

What should you ask before deciding?

Ask what each quote includes before comparing totals. A cheap number that leaves out meals, transfers and entry tickets is not a cheap trip. Our guide to what a China trip costs by style shows how to line up inclusions.

If you can, pick the destination where your dates fall in off-peak season. See peak versus off-peak prices for China, and ask for the same view from the other two. Then browse the costs topic page for the rest of the series.

Questions Malaysians ask

Which is cheaper for Malaysians: China, Japan or Vietnam?

There is no honest single answer, because it depends on season, trip length, hotel level and flights from your city. Price the same trip on the same lines for each country, with today's quotes, and the answer for your dates will be plain.

Why not just compare daily spending?

Daily spending leaves out the biggest lines, which are flights and hotels, and ignores setup costs such as payments and mobile data. A fair comparison covers the whole trip from your front door in Malaysia to the return home.

What is different about China compared with the other two?

China needs payment and app setup before you fly, because mobile payment is the everyday norm and familiar apps are blocked. It also has a single time zone and a visa-free stay for Malaysians. Check each country's official entry page for its own rules.
