Is Your Passport Ready for China?

The tickets are bought, and then you notice how soon your passport runs out.

Your passport is the one document a trip cannot start without. If the expiry date is close or the pages are full, deal with it before you pay for non-refundable tickets. A small fix now is cheaper than a refused boarding at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

First-timers and seniors feel this worry quietly. It is sensible to check, and it takes five minutes.

Where does the real risk sit?

Mostly at the airline counter in Malaysia. Airlines are responsible for the passengers they carry, so check-in staff look at your passport, your onward ticket and your entry rights before you board. A problem there ends the trip before any Chinese officer sees you.

Visa-free entry removes the visa but not the passport check. See our visa-free China guide for what the exemption covers.

What should you check, in order?

Go through it the way a check-in agent would.

  • Expiry date: confirm it with your airline and the Chinese embassy, because the required margin can change.
  • Blank pages: keep clear pages for stamps.
  • Condition: no peeling photo page, no water damage, no torn cover.
  • Name: the same spelling on tickets, hotel bookings and any app you will register.
  • Photo: still recognisably you.

If anything fails, renew first and book afterwards. Renewal times vary, so ask the Immigration Department early.

Why does the name matter so much?

Much of daily life in China is tied to your passport name. Hotels copy it for registration[1], you need it to buy and board long-distance trains[2], and Alipay and Weixin Pay verification needs the passport name and a live selfie[3].

Use the same spelling everywhere. Our China arrival card guide shows where the passport number appears next.

What if you travel with children?

Children need their own passports with the same checks. Their rules and extra papers are in our children’s passports guide.

What should you carry?

Bring the original passport in your hand luggage, never in a checked bag. Keep a photocopy and a phone photo apart from the passport, in case it is lost. Our KLIA departure checklist puts passport checks in the right place on the day.

Questions Malaysians ask

How long must my passport be valid for a China trip?

The exact margin is set by China's authorities and by your airline, and airlines can be stricter than the border. We leave the exact figure to the official source. Ask your airline and check the Chinese embassy in Malaysia for the current requirement, and renew early if your passport expires soon after the trip.

Do I need blank pages in my passport?

Keep clear pages for the entry and exit stamps, and check the requirement with your airline if your passport is nearly full. A passport with no room left for stamps can cause trouble at both ends. Renewing before a long trip is simpler than arguing at a counter.

What if my passport is damaged or worn?

Loose pages, a peeling photo page, water damage or a torn cover can all lead to questions at check-in. If yours looks tired, replace it before you travel. A new passport costs time and money, but a refused boarding costs the whole holiday.

Does visa-free entry change the passport rules?

No. The exemption covers ordinary passport holders for up to 30 days per stay, but it still depends on a valid passport that the airline and officers accept. It removes the visa, not the passport checks. Read our visa-free guide for the full list of things to confirm.

What should seniors check first?

Look at the expiry date and the photo. Older passports may carry a photo that no longer looks like you, which can slow the counter. If the gap is large, renew with a recent photo. Keep a photocopy and a phone photo of the main page apart from the passport itself.
