Chengdu East Station or the City Centre

An early train, a budget to guard and a tired family: decide where your Chengdu night belongs.

Sleep near Chengdu East Station only for the night you arrive late or leave early. For the nights you want to enjoy the city, sleep in the centre. That one rule settles most plans, and it protects both your sleep and your budget.

If you are worried about missing a train in a city you do not know, that is a fair concern. A calm morning is worth a lot, but it does not need to cost you every evening.

Which Chengdu base suits you?

Choose by what the night is for. Here is how the two options compare.

When does the station hotel make sense?

When the train decides your day. Chengdu East is where fast trains to Chongqing leave, and the Chengdu-Chongqing intercity high-speed line opened in December 2015 and runs about 307 km[1].

Typical fast trains from Chengdu East to Chongqing West take roughly 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 30 minutes, with the fastest reported near 1 hour 7 minutes[2]. A short train makes a day trip easy, but you still need to be at the station on time. Our Chengdu and Chongqing pair guide shows how to split the days.

What should your station morning look like?

Plan it the evening before. Foreigners must show a passport to buy a long-distance ticket and pass the platform gates, so keep it within reach[3].

Expect X-ray bag checks at the entrance, and arrive 30 to 40 minutes before departure at major stations[4]. The official luggage limit on these trains is 20 kg for adults and 10 kg for children, though bags are rarely weighed[5]. Ask the hotel whether a taxi can stop at the door.

How do you keep the budget honest?

A cheap room by the station can still cost more once you add rides to dinner and the sights. Compare the two rooms, then add the rides.

  • Use the station hotel for one night only.
  • Book the centre for the nights you want to walk and eat.
  • Keep a flexible evening for rain.

Where do you eat halal?

Decide halal meals a day ahead, whichever area you pick. Look for the green qingzhen (清真) sign, then ask whether the kitchen and ingredients match what you eat. Hui-run places are a sensible starting point, since the Hui avoid pork[6], but Muslim-owned is not the same as certified.

JAKIM (Malaysia’s Islamic development department) dropped the China Islamic Association from its list of recognised foreign halal certification bodies in February 2025[7]. Confirm the current position on halal.gov.my before you rely on a Chinese label.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is it worth sleeping near Chengdu East Station?

Only for a transit night. If you arrive late or leave on an early train, a station-side hotel saves a long ride and a stressful morning. If you have two or more nights to enjoy Chengdu, sleep in the centre and treat the station as a short taxi or metro ride.

Can we reach the city centre easily from Chengdu East?

Yes, by metro or taxi. The ride is long enough that you should not plan it with a tight deadline. If your train leaves at a fixed time, allow a calm margin for the metro or a taxi, and keep the hotel address saved in Chinese.

Where should we stay if we plan a Chongqing day trip?

The trains are quick and run from Chengdu East, so a station hotel is useful for an early start. For a relaxed day, many families stay in the centre and take a taxi in the morning. Choose by who needs the extra sleep.

Is Chengdu easy for Muslim travellers?

It takes planning. Look for the green 清真 sign, choose Hui Muslim-run places and ask about the kitchen and ingredients. A Chinese halal label does not automatically meet JAKIM recognition, so check halal.gov.my. We can mark likely halal meals along your route before you go.

How early should we arrive for a high-speed train from Chengdu East?

Allow for the bag check and the passport gate. At major stations, arrive 30 to 40 minutes before departure. A large station can also take a few minutes to cross on foot, so find your platform entrance before you queue.
