Beijing South Station Hotels: Too Far?

A fast train in the morning and a first look at Beijing: is the station area worth it?

Beijing South hotels are convenient for a fast-train transit night and too far for a full sightseeing stay. Use the station area for the night you arrive late or leave early, and sleep nearer the old centre for the nights you want to see Beijing.

If you are choosing between a cheap room and an easy morning, both are fair worries. The honest answer is to match the area to the night.

How far is Beijing South from the sights?

Far enough to plan for. Most Beijing to Shanghai high-speed trains use Beijing South, which is about 6 km from Tiananmen Square[1].

That is a proper metro or taxi ride, longer at rush hour. If your train leaves early, being close to the platform saves a stressful morning. If you want to walk to the Forbidden City and old streets, the station area is the wrong base.

What does the Shanghai train change?

It makes the station area tempting. The fastest Beijing to Shanghai G trains are quoted at as little as 4 hours 18 minutes[2].

A long train day is easier after a calm night. If you leave early, sleep near the station once, then spend the rest of your nights in the centre. Our Beijing hotel area guide compares Wangfujing, Qianmen and Sanlitun for those nights.

What should your station morning look like?

Plan it the evening before. Foreigners must show a passport to buy a long-distance ticket and pass the platform gates, so keep it within reach[3].

Expect X-ray bag checks at the entrance, and arrive 30 to 40 minutes before departure at major stations[4]. The official luggage limit on these trains is 20 kg for adults and 10 kg for children, though bags are rarely weighed[5].

Where do you eat halal?

Plan halal meals one by one. Look for the green Arabic sign and 清真 (qingzhen), and favour Hui Muslim-run places, since the Hui avoid pork[6]. Ask about the kitchen and ingredients, and remember that Muslim-owned is not the same as certified.

Niujie Mosque is traditionally dated to 996 and is regarded as Beijing’s oldest and largest mosque[7]. Our Niujie stay guide explains how to sleep near it.

What is the next step?

Pick the transit night, then choose the rest of your base. Compare the other station in our Beijing West station guide, and read the station versus sights decision guide if your times are tight.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is Beijing South Station close to the sights?

It is within the city but not beside the sights. It sits about 6 km from Tiananmen Square, which is a proper metro or taxi ride. Use the station area for a transit night and stay nearer the old centre for the nights you want to explore.

Is a Beijing South hotel cheaper?

The room may cost less, but the rides to dinner and the Forbidden City add up. Compare the room price with the extra transport, and use the budget planner to see the whole picture. The station area works best for one night, not five.

How early should we reach Beijing South for a fast train?

Allow for the bag check and the passport gate. At major stations, arrive 30 to 40 minutes before departure. A hotel that a taxi can reach at the door makes that morning calm, especially with children or grandparents.

Can we find halal food near Beijing South?

It takes planning. Look for the green 清真 sign and ask about the kitchen. A Chinese halal label does not automatically meet JAKIM recognition, so check halal.gov.my. Niujie is the better-known Muslim area, and our Niujie stay guide shows how to sleep nearby.
