For a first visit, treat the Great Wall as a day trip from Beijing and keep your main hotel in the city. Sleep near the wall only when early light, quiet and a slow evening are the reason for the trip.
That choice is easier to make when you know what you gain and what you give up. The Great Wall was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987[1], and it rewards a calm approach.
What do you gain by sleeping near the wall?
You gain time. You can reach the path early, before most tour groups arrive, and see the light change in peace.
Photographers and couples value that most. Read our Badaling versus Mutianyu guide to choose the section first, then decide on the base.
What do you give up?
You give up choice. Food is limited, evening options are few, and you are far from a hospital or a large shop.
Halal meals need special planning. Bring dry snacks and ask your guesthouse what the kitchen uses. A day trip from the city keeps your meals and your luggage simple.
Is a day trip simpler?
Usually, yes. You sleep in Beijing, travel out in the morning and return by evening, so you keep one hotel and one luggage drop.
Our Beijing hotel area guide helps you choose that base. If you travel with parents, the seniors guide to the easiest sections is a better starting point than a night away.
What must you book first?
Book the ticket before the hotel. Mutianyu requires real-name booking with an ID card, permanent resident card or passport, limited to one ticket per document per day[2].
The official notice gave a 15-day booking window, but a 2026 guide said 7 days[3]. Confirm the rule on the official channel before you plan, and do not assume the notice is current.
What about drones and gear?
Most Great Wall sections near Beijing are drone no-fly zones[4]. Leave the drone at home unless you have checked the rule in writing. A light tripod and a spare layer matter more on the wall.
