Scenic Area Shuttle Buses

The park gate is far from the sights, and you need to understand how visitors get inside.

A scenic area shuttle is a bus that runs inside a large park, carrying visitors between the entrance and the main viewpoints. Big scenic areas are too spread out to cover on foot in a day. Most visitors use the shuttle for the long stretches and walk the short ones.

Where you meet it on a trip

You meet it at parks such as Zhangjiajie, Jiuzhaigou and many mountain sites. The shuttle often has its own ticket, separate from the entrance fee.

Other lifts add to the cost too. In Wulingyuan, the Bailong Elevator climbs 326 m[1]. Ask what is included before you pay.

A practical tip

Read the park map before you arrive and pick a loop that suits your group. Ride to the farthest stop first, then work your way back, and keep one stop in reserve if anyone is tired. Carry water and a light layer, since weather changes with height. Keep your ticket and passport together, because staff check both.

For more on costs, see our guide on scenic ticket fees not in the package. For Zhangjiajie in particular, read how to reach the park from the airport.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is the shuttle bus included in my entrance ticket?

Not always. In many large parks the shuttle or eco-bus is a separate ticket, as are cable cars and lifts. Check the park's official ticket page, and ask your agency whether shuttles are in the package price. Our guide on scenic fees not in the package lists what to ask.

Do I have to use the shuttle?

In large parks, private cars are usually not allowed inside, so the shuttle is the practical way to reach the main stops. Some parks allow walking between nearby sights. Decide by distance and stamina, and use the shuttle for the long stretches.

How do I avoid long queues?

Arrive when the park opens, ride the shuttle to the farthest stop first, and walk back towards the gate as crowds build. Avoid public holidays if you can. Keep your ticket and passport ready, since many parks check both at the stop.
