Tongli is the water town to choose if Zhouzhuang feels too well known and you want a slower, quieter day. It suits return visitors and couples who prefer wandering to a checklist.
You may worry that a lesser-known town means less to see. In practice, a smaller crowd gives you more time with each bridge and lane.
What is Tongli, and who enjoys it?
Tongli is a canal town in Jiangsu, near Suzhou, with stone bridges, narrow lanes and old family houses along the water. It is smaller and calmer than Zhouzhuang, and it suits couples, photographers and travellers who have already done one famous water town.
If you have not been to any water town, our Zhouzhuang day trip guide is a gentler first choice.
How does it compare with Zhouzhuang?
Tongli is the quieter option, and Zhouzhuang is the better-known one. Choose by pace.
| Question | Tongli | Zhouzhuang |
|---|---|---|
| Crowd feel | Calmer, more local | Busier, more famous |
| Best for | Return visitors, couples | First-timers, families |
| Pace | Slow wandering | Compact highlights |
| Day shape | Half day to full day | Half day to full day |
Crowd levels shift with the season and with public holidays, so a quiet town can still be busy on a holiday. Our guide to staying in Zhouzhuang or Tongli helps you decide whether to sleep there.
How do you get there?
Most travellers go by road from Suzhou or Shanghai. A private car is the easiest way to pair Tongli with another stop, and our private car guide for the water towns explains what to confirm with a driver.
If you use Didi, foreign visitors commonly hail it through the Alipay mini program, which needs no Chinese phone number[1]. Amap (Gaode) added English language support in 2025, though dates differ between sources, so check the app itself[2].
How do you plan the day?
Arrive mid-morning, walk the main lanes and bridges, and have a long lunch. Spend the afternoon on the quieter back lanes, then return while the light is still soft.
Entry rules, areas and ticket types are set by the scenic area, so check the official mini program or ask your hotel before you go. A passport is needed for rail tickets and platform gates[3], so keep it with you if you take a train to Suzhou first.
How do you eat halal and pray?
Plan this ahead. Hui Muslims follow Islamic dietary laws and avoid pork[4], so a Hui-run noodle shop is a good thing to look for, though a small town may have none.
In February 2025 JAKIM (Malaysia’s Islamic development department) removed the China Islamic Association from its recognised foreign halal certification list[5]. A Chinese label therefore cannot be assumed to meet Malaysian recognition, so check halal.gov.my. Carry dry snacks, and keep a full halal meal for Suzhou or Shanghai.
When is another option better?
Choose the Suzhou gardens if you want formal courtyards and scholars’ houses; our Suzhou gardens guide helps you pick one. Choose a night in the city if you want to link the day with Pingjiang Road in the evening.
Typhoon season can bring flooding to the region, and Shanghai, Hangzhou and coastal Jiangsu are rated medium typhoon risk[6]. Check the forecast, and see the attractions topic page to compare more places.
