Shanxi is worth adding if you want old walled streets, cliff-side temples and fewer crowds, and if you have at least two spare days beyond a Beijing trip. Pingyao and Datong are far enough apart that most people choose one for an overnight and treat the other as optional.
If your trip already feels full, that is a good reason to be careful. Shanxi rewards slower travellers.
Who enjoys Shanxi most?
History lovers, photographers and return visitors who have done the big sights. It is less suited to groups who want shopping or short transfers. Choose it for lanes, courtyards and quiet.
How long does it need?
Plan two nights to enjoy one place, or four to cover both. Read about Pingyao’s ancient city wall to see what a day there looks like. Test your plan with the pace checker.
How do you get there from Malaysia?
Fly to a Chinese gateway and continue by train. Malaysia Airlines said in July 2026 that it serves nine China-region gateways, including Beijing[1]. Our Beijing region overview explains that gateway.
Foreigners with ordinary passports can buy train tickets on 12306[2], and a passport is needed to board[3]. Allow time at the station for bag checks[4]. Malaysian ordinary passport holders can stay up to 30 days per stay without a visa[5].
Where should you stay?
In Pingyao, a courtyard guesthouse inside the walls gives the best atmosphere. Check the cold, the noise and whether a taxi can reach the lane; our courtyard stay guide lists what to ask. In Datong, choose an area near the rail station for easy arrivals.
What is there to see?
- Pingyao: the walled old town, courtyards and merchant houses.
- Datong: temples carved into rock, and the Hanging Temple fixed to a cliff.
Check opening and visitor limits for the Hanging Temple before you go, since access can change.
What about halal food, seniors and children?
Shanxi is a noodle province. The Hui avoid pork[6], so ask about broth and fillings each time and look for the green 清真 sign. JAKIM removed the China Islamic Association from its recognised list in February 2025, so a Chinese label cannot be assumed to meet Malaysian recognition[7]. Our northern halal guide has more.
Stone lanes and wall steps tire seniors and small children, so keep days short.
When is another region better?
If you want a classic heritage stop with more services, consider Shandong’s Qufu and Mount Tai. Browse the regions topic page for more.
