Sanya

Is Tianya Haijiao Worth Your Time?

A famous name on every Sanya list, and a short holiday with limited hours to spare.

Tianya Haijiao is a pleasant coastal stop for a first visit, best in the late afternoon and kept short. If your Sanya days are few, it is the first thing to drop, and the last thing you will regret.

It is easy to feel pressure to see every famous name. A calmer approach is to choose two or three stops and enjoy them.

Who should go?

First-timers and couples who like coastal walks and a sense of place will enjoy it most. Anyone who has already seen enough shoreline, or who wants activities, can skip it.

Compare it with Nanshan Temple if you want something with more to see.

How long do you need?

Allow an hour or two, plus the trip from your hotel. Pair it with an early dinner rather than a second sight.

For a short stay, our Sanya itineraries shows what to keep.

When should you go?

Aim for late afternoon, when the light is soft and the heat eases. Hainan is rated high risk for typhoons[1], and the main typhoon season is July to September[2], so check the forecast for your days.

How do you reach it?

Take a taxi or arrange a car with your hotel. Google Maps and WhatsApp are blocked in mainland China[3], so save the place name in Chinese and agree the return trip.

What is the walking like?

Short paths, mostly flat, with uneven ground near the water. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water and a hat.

For seniors, keep to the main path and rest regularly. For small children, hold hands near the waterline.

What about halal food and prayer?

Plan meals in Sanya city before you go. Hui Muslims avoid pork[4], and Muslim-run restaurants are the easiest starting point.

At Tianya Haijiao you are far from any Muslim restaurant, so eat in Sanya city first. In February 2025 JAKIM (Malaysia’s Islamic development department) dropped the China Islamic Association from its recognised foreign halal bodies, which means a Chinese halal label may not meet Malaysian recognition[5]. Pray back at your hotel and confirm the qibla direction before you head out.

What should you carry?

Bring water, a hat and sunscreen, since shade is limited near the shore. A light cover-up helps with the evening breeze.

Keep a little cash as well as your payment app, because merchants are expected to accept cash[6].

When is another stop better?

If you want a full beach day, choose Yalong Bay. To decide between Hainan bases, read Sanya or Haikou as your region.

For a couple’s trip, see our Sanya honeymoon plan and test your days with the pace checker.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is Tianya Haijiao worth visiting?

For a first visit to Hainan, it is a pleasant half-hour to two hours, especially for the coast and the famous rocks. If your days are short and full, it is the first stop to drop.

What is the best time to go?

Late afternoon, when the light is soft and the heat eases. Avoid the middle of the day in summer. Check the forecast, since wind and rain make the shoreline less pleasant.

Is it suitable for seniors?

The paths are mostly short and flat, but surfaces can be uneven near the water. Wear sturdy shoes, bring a hat and take a buggy or shuttle if offered. Rest regularly.

Can Muslim travellers eat nearby?

Plan ahead. Carry snacks and look for Muslim-run restaurants in Sanya city before you go. A Chinese halal label does not automatically meet JAKIM recognition, so ask about the kitchen.
